Where is a good Message Board (forum) community for Flash game design and development?
Vizzed Board is an excellent Message Board for discussing Flash Game Development, Video Game Design, etc
http://www.vizzed.com/vizzedboard/index.php?sideboard=2
You can even work with teams of people to develop games and you can request them to give you and your team your own forum.
I am looking to build another site and want to incorporate some Flash effects. I am checking out Coffeecup–any recommendations? Thanks!
Adoble Flash CS3 is an excellent program that you are looking for. But it is pricey.
I understand alot of programs by adobe and other really greedy companies often have a free source program made by computer science students, or other open and helpful people, I wonder if such a program exists for flash.
what sort of evil force deletes valid answers?

I’m wondering if you can design something in Flash to pop up at certain times, and can this be user-definable?
I want both the time and data entered to be user-definable. Not as a separate ‘window’ like in HTML, but I would envision it to be Flash.
Also, if the above is possible, and the user had navigated to another website altogether (even if you had frames on), would it still pop up, or no?
Flash uses actionscript 3 these days to allow you (the developer) almost as much control as you need.
You could easily make pop up windows with user definable content, but it would almost certainly mean that user info must be stored either in a database (like mysql, oracle, access), a flat database (like XML, or a CSV), or in a cookie on the clients machine.
This means that you may need to look at other intermediate languages as flash has pretty big security restrictions when it comes to accessing databases etc.
A great combination is FLASH / PHP / MYSQL.
The reason I pick these three for you is that there is SO many people also using them, meaning lots of support and tutorials out there.
If you want to actually make a separate window pop up, you may need to use a little javascript, which you should at least know how to hack, steal, mash, copy and paste etc if you are going to develop anything for the web.
Php and Javascript (and most other web development languages) can be used to feed Flash Vars into a swf in an html page. In this way, you can use the intermediate language (e.g. PHP) to read cookies or GET and POST variables and feed them to the swf as it is loaded in.
Your question is a little broad. What do you need to be user definable, the moment when something pops up, or the content contained in the ‘pop up’.
Personally, I wouldn’t use an extra pop up window as this may well be blocked by the users browser.
If you don’t know what I’m talking about, no offence intended, but you will have a LOT of reading and learning to do, unless you are a genius and good at ‘borrowing’ for mashups. I mean, if this is a popup within a normal HTML page, then you will probably want to learn (if you haven’t already) CSS too.
I’m looking for something like Macromedia Flash MX, that I can make flash movies with. Are there any good open source alternatives?
No, only Adobe Flash (used to be Macromedia Flash)
