The sequel. Props to the original – not sure who did it?

I am in my last year of school, I am working on my BFA in Graphic Design. I am currently living in northern California (about 1 hour north of San Francisco) and I am planning to search for jobs within the field and re-locate. I am thinking of either San Francisco, Los Angeles or possibly Orange county. I wanted to see if anyone has had any opinion or personal experience as a graphic designer in any of these cities. I have lived in Orange Co. before so I am open to relocating down there or closer to LA. I know that SF is a great place, but I prefer the climate and beaches of SoCal. Any thoughts?
Milwaukee. definitely.
I am an aspiring graphic designer and want to purchase a computer that will last me through my undergraduate degree in design. What is the standard that will last me through my working years?
I’d probably go with a Mac Pro and a big monitor, not necessarily Apple. However if you want something more compact and a bit cheaper, get one of the higher end iMacs with the 24” monitor. Don’t get a laptop or the Mac mini because they just aren’t powerful enough or the screen is too small.
I’m interested in doing that career for my future but I would like to know the average salary of a graphic designer (maybe an advertising-type designer) or web designer.
I’d like to know all of them. Including newbies and oldies
How much experience? A newbie makes considerably less than someone with 10 years experience. Please clarify
Graphic designers make different amounts of money depending on what company they work for, how successful they are and who their clients are. Calculate a graphic designer’s salary, which can range from $40,000 to hundreds of thousands of dollars per year, with information from the creative director of a design firm in this free video on graphic design.

Per hour and per year.. I really want to be a graphic
designer and would love to know this information!
Thanks in advance! I live in Missouri by the way
It depends largely on your skill level, who you work for, how many years of experience you have, your education, and where you are in the country (cost of living skew).
I recently went to a designers conference and came across a booth (The Creative Group™) with a booklet that had salary surveys for people in the creative industry. I scanned it in for another question but here’s the link:

And in case you’re confused about any of the job titles on that list, you can find a short description of each on the Creative Group website. http://www.creativegroup.com/CreativeAndProduction
The Creative Group, by the way is a creative staffing agency that writes articles and does studies on trend and career issues for designers.
john stossel does a short report on the three common design mistakes americans make. picked the link up from jessica helfand’s site. http://www.winterhouse.com/

Anyone who has their bachlors degree in Graphic Design and have any tips to give.I want to be a graphic designer, but I don’t if it would be better going to community college or a private college like the ones they have online? Is it worth the pay?
I’ve been a full time graphic designer for the last 15 years.
I didn’t get a degree or go to college for it, so I can’t give you direct advice, other than to say, going to a community college is going to be fine – I’ve gotten employed without any schooling at all.
One HUGE piece of advice I will give you though – learn Web Design, and learn the programming side of it as well.
That’s where the real money is.
I’m back-tracking, trying to learn that now, because I’m in print design, and the pay sucks in comparison.
There are a lot of reasons for this, which I’ll skip here, but you cam PM me if you want to know the details.
My advice would be to find a web designer, or a web design company, intern there for free to learn web design while taking some classes at community college.
Get all the right software, read tons of books on the subject, and show people your enthusiasm to learn this stuff, and they will help teach you.
A day in the life of a graphic designer includes going through emails, getting back to clients, reviewing proofs, drawing out concepts and consulting with printers. Walk through a typical day of a graphic designer with information from the creative director of a design firm in this free video on graphic design.

I’m working towards getting a certificate for graphic design but I still feel like I’m not doing everything to become a graphic designer or have all the skills needed to become one. What books should I read, what should I know, what skills/talents should I have, what magizines should I read and have, what questions should I ask other graphic designers? There’s a few more I didn’t type.
I’m taking The Graphic Design option/ Certificate program at AACC (Anne Arundel Commnunity College). This is my first year at the school.
What Level are you working at?, I did an A2 level Graphic Design at College and came out with an A and now I am at Uni doing Product Design & Technology, so a little more info would help.
Graphic Design doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with your ability to draw, if your good with computers, you can use programs like photoshop to make yourself good, I know someone who can’t draw for squat get an A2 at college. Personally though, I would just try to get good at being creative, thinking about originality, use design programs on computers, learn to draw well if you can and make sure you always stick to the brief and can always explain your choices.
